Colonel Chabert by Honore De Balzac
My favorite book is Colonel Charbert by Honore Balzac who is writer an eighteenth and nineteenth century. This book was published in 1832, 17 years after the end of the first Empire (1802-1815). The Colonel Chabert or this real name Hycinthe Chabert was a colonel of the imperial army but was left for dead at the battle of Eylau in 1807 between the ruse empire and the french empire.
After the battle he is abandoned for death and lts his wife inherit all that fortune. He was rescued by a peasant who feed him and will then start his journey towards French capital. When he arrives at the capital he going to see old an old lawyer friend so that he can help him retrieve his statue. He will have trouble convincing that he is indeed Colonel Chabert who was dead in Eylau.
After a long walk, he will finally get nothing neither money or grateful for his identity. He will end up without shelter in streets of Paris next to the hospital of Salpetriere.
